Reception

Welcome to Class Robin Hood and Class Sherwood, our Reception classes. Class Robin Hood is taught by Miss Parkin, and Class Sherwood by Miss Wright. We help children settle into school life, build friendships and develop the confidence to explore, play and learn.

In Reception, we follow the Curriculum Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage. Children learn through a balance of play, practical activities and adult-led teaching, with opportunities to investigate and discover both indoors and outdoors. We build on each child’s interests and support them as they become more independent.

Learning is organised into seven areas:

  • Communication and Language – developing listening, understanding and speaking skills.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development – building relationships, managing feelings and growing in confidence.

  • Physical Development – developing movement, coordination and the skills needed to use tools and hold a pencil.

  • Literacy – enjoying stories, learning phonics and beginning to read and write.

  • Mathematics – exploring numbers, counting, patterns, shapes and measures.

  • Understanding the World – discovering people, communities and the natural world.

  • Expressive Arts and Design – exploring imagination and creativity through art, music, movement and role play.

We value working closely with families to make each child’s first year at school a happy and rewarding experience.

Our Learning This Term

This half term, our topic is ‘Winter Wonderland’. Children will explore seasonal changes, investigate ice and snow, and use maps and stories to compare our local area with Lapland. We will discover how Christmas traditions have changed over time, create festive artwork inspired by Henri Matisse, and enjoy Christmas songs and our Nativity performance. Along the way, we will practise taking turns and learn to respect the different ways families celebrate.
